Prof. Katherine E. Fleming

 

Prof fleming smallKatherine E. Fleming is the Alexander S. Onassis Professor of Hellenic Culture and Civilization at New York University, where she also serves the university as Vice Chancellor and Deputy Provost.

   Fleming also directs the Remarque Institute at NYU in New York City and at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris.   In Greece, Fleming is the President of the Board of the University of Piraeus.  

Fleming was educated at Columbia University/Barnard College (B.A., 1988); the University of Chicago (M.A., 1989); and the University of California, Berkeley (Ph.D., 1995).   A historian by training, she specializes in the modern history of Greece and the broader Mediterranean context.  Her scholarship focuses on religious minorities and the formation of national identity in the eighteenth and nineteenth-centuries.  She is most recently author of Greece--A Jewish History (Princeton University Press, 2008), which has won numerous prizes, among them the National Jewish Book Award and the Runciman Award.
